Tastevins (Wine Tasting Cups)

The tastevin (pronounced taht-vahn) is a shallow, highly reflective silver cup that originated in the Burgundy region of France. Historically, its design served a critical technical function for winemakers and merchants before the invention of electric light

They were produced in Sterling, silver plate, and pewter. These have various hallmarks and designs.

My favorite is the rooster Figural that was made for a Consorsio Chianti Classico club meeting in the 1970s. The Consorzio is made up of the Chianti Classico producers  who, in 1926 decided to make their own rules about production because they wanted to be better than the government rules. You can find the Gallo Negro (Black Rooster) on the neck stands of the member’s bottles even today.
